How Fireworks Work
1. Computer Controlled Firing
The ultimate in precision choreography, the computer firing system stores the display script on a hard drive. At the push of a button time-code is received and the computer syncs with the music and fires the program with split-second accuracy.
2. Electronic Firing Systems
Electronic firing affords the technician greater control over the presentation of fireworks effects. Voice commands can also be received by the technician to fire the display in sync with a soundtrack, live music, or other types of cue-driven events.
3. The Launch Tubes
The mortar tubes used to launch the aerial shells typically range in size from 3" to 12" in diameter. When firing an electronic or computer controlled display there is a mortar for each individual shell. The mortars are arranged in racks and the shells are preloaded according to a loading blue print provided by the show design team. The mortars are 30" in length and made of fiberglass or high density polyethylene.
4. Igniting The Shell
Each pyrotechnic device to be computer or electronically ignited is equipped with an electric match. The electric match is in contact with the black powder fuse of the pyrotechnic device. To ignite the shell and send it skyward, electricity is sent to the match. The exploding tip of the match lights the device and a black powder charge launches the shell from the tube.
5. The Burst in the Sky
As the shell accents, a time fuse is burning into its center. This fuse will reach the explosive material inside the shell at a precise altitude determined by the length of the fuse. Once the time fuse reaches the material inside the shell, it causes another explosion which lights the color or noise effects and disperses them in to the sky.

What can I say? It was the best fireworks display I have ever seen. I had no idea that imagery like that could be created with pyrotechnics."
